Tra il 1920 e il 1930 Le Corbusier e suo cugino Pierre Jeanneret costruirono una serie di ville e case unifamiliari - molte a Parigi e dintorni - che ebbero un ruolo importante nell'affermare e consolidare la loro reputazione di professionisti. Attraverso i progetti svilupparono e affinarono un sofisticato vocabolario di soluzioni compositive che seppe stimolare e nutrire l'architettura internazionale per oltre mezzo secolo.
Lo studio, magistralmente condotto dallo storico inglese Tim Benton, prende in rassegna numerosi progetti di case, ville e appartamenti tra i quali, oltre alle note Villa La Roche a Parigi e Villa Savoye a Poissy, Villa Berque e studio Ozenfant a Parigi, Villa Church a Ville-d'Avray, Villa Cook a Boulogne.

Illustrato attraverso un'iconografia d'archivio, in larga parte proveniente dalla Fondation Le Corbusier, il volume ripercorre l'evoluzione delle differenti soluzioni abitative sviluppate da Le Corbusier, un ricco laboratorio di introspezione e innovazione la cui comprensione ci è necessaria per apprezzare e capire l'architettura del maestro svizzero.
