Para conformar este relato modulado ha sido esencial la disponibilidad generosa de Norman Foster, la hospitalidad cordial de Elena Ochoa y la ayuda eficaz de innumerables miembros del estudio organizando visitas, explicando proyectos o preparando material gráfico y literario. Lo prolijo del esfuerzo seguramente no se advierte en lo magro del resultado, que a fuer de sintético ha debido omitir obras relevantes, describir otras con brevedad telegráfica y dedicar a muchas apenas algo más que una mención o un adjetivo. Esta voluntad de concisión me llevó a redactar el texto original en inglés, a fin de evitar los prolijos barroquismos del castellano, al cual traduje de viva voz la versión que aquí se imprime; el proceso ha hecho quizá los textos más informativos y precisos, pero seguramente a costa de su calidad literaria. Finalmente, he procurado que la amistad y la gratitud no interfieran en la naturaleza crítica de los textos: es algo que debo a un arquitecto que, en este momento cenital de su carrera, está abocado a elegir entre su compromiso con una oficina colosal y su compromiso con una trayectoria; entre su fidelidad a 500 empleados y su fidelidad a la obra; entre su responsabilidad empresarial y su responsabilidad histórica.
