Risale al 1978 l'opera con cui Rem Koolhaas si è imposto all'attenzione della cultura progettuale contemporanea: il volume Delirious New York (recentemente riedito proprio da Electa), un'analisi attenta e divertita della condizione metropolitana dell'architettura moderna, ha anticipato tematiche che diverse esperienze successive, negli Stati Uniti e in Europa, hanno sviluppato. Fondatore dello studio Oma (Office for Metropolitan Architecture) con sedi anche a Londra e ad Atene, costituì nel 1980 la sua sede più attiva, a Rotterdam. Dallo studio olandese sono usciti numerosi progetti elaborati in occasione di importanti concorsi internazionali - da quelli berlinesi promossi dall'Iba a quelli per il Parco della Villette a Parigi e per il municipio dell'Aia - e altrettante proposte progettuali destinate a tradursi in alcune significative realizzazioni, come il Teatro nazionale di danza all'Aia. Le pagine del presente volume ordinano il lavoro svolto dall'Oma in particolare nel corso degli anni ottanta. L'ordine di presentazione dei progetti e i testi esplicativi e teorici dello stesso Koolhaas intendono evidenziare le connessioni tra le diverse tappe della ricerca.
